If you're like me, you want to hunt plains game in Africa, but you don't want to hunt behind gameproof fences. You also want to keep the price down. Here's a hunt that fills the bill. You and a pal can hunt free-ranging game for a week, each taking an oryx, a kudu, a warthog, a zebra and a springbuck for less than $5,000 a person. That's less than most good private-land elk hunts nowadays. Unfortunately, many sportsmen who travel to Africa for the first time are disappointed to find that the animals are behind gameproof fences. Here's a hunt that takes place on unfenced land in Namibia. This country used to be known as South West Africa and was part of South Africa until 1990. Most hunts for free-ranging game in Africa are very expensive, but this outfitter has affordable rates. This is a real hunt in a beautiful unspoiled wild landscape with deep canyons and natural caves. The outfitter hunts two areas, a private ranch and several large concessions about 250 miles northwest of Windhoek. Elevations average about 3,800 feet above sea level. The first hunts of the year begin about Feb. 1 and the last hunts end in late November. A plains game hunt is a minimum of seven days. If you want to hunt leopard and cheetah (along with antelope), you must book at least 12 days.

The outfitter is a master guide and a member of the Namibia Professional Hunters Association. He owns the main ranch. You'll hunt either by tracking and stalking animals or by hunting from a high stand, sometimes overlooking water sources. You'll stay in an African style lodge with two separate rooms with a shower and toilet. The lodge features a big open veranda for relaxation. The meals are German style with local specialties. Typically you'll scout for tracks each morning, then get on the trail of the game you want. A $1,500 deposit is required. You must pay the balance in cash or traveler's checks at the end of the hunt.
