Free-roaming axis deer offer unusual spring hunting opportunity in Texas |

If you're looking for a fun spring hunt, an outfitter we know offers a hunt for free-ranging axis deer and blackbucks near Kerrville, Texas. The deer are wild, but they're abundant enough that each hunter should get a nice stag. Hunts are three days for axis deer, and you can add a blackbuck, wild boar, mouflon or Corsican ram. Hunting is from mid-May through mid-June. Food and guide service is included. There are nice accommodations on the ranch, and there's a walk-in meat cooler. The outfitter said both animals provide top-rate game meat.
"You'll kill one," the outfitter said. "There are lots of them, and though they're wild and not easy to hunt, there are enough of them that everybody gets one. We hunt during the rut from mid-May to mid-June. They bugle and act a lot like elk then. They're southern hemisphere deer, and that's why they rut in the spring. We try to get everybody a 30-incher or better, and we usually do. Sometimes we'll get one a little smaller with some character, like kickers. "Sometimes I can offer additional animals at a lower price than I've listed here. When I get a group, I negotiate as good a deal as I can." |
