One of our outfitters in Alberta is buying a black bear hunting concession for seven hunters a year so that he can guide in his favorite area about 100 miles west of Edmonton. The outfitter buys or leases an allocation to take hunters. He typically takes five to seven hunters a year. Here's a typical recent season: Five hunters got seven bears with each hunter taking at least one. This is a spot-and-stalk hunt because bait hunting is prohibited due to presence of grizzlies in the area. The price of the hunt includes airport pickup in Edmonton, lodging and meals. "This area is fantastic for bear," the outfitter said. "I've seen some really big bears in the unit, and a pretty good number of them are blond, light brown, strawberry or chocolate brown. Because it's a spot-and-stalk hunt, it's probably better for rifle hunters, but a bowhunter who is good at stalking should have a good chance, too. A friend and I saw two monster bears in there, and one of them I'm sure weighed at least 500 pounds." Details.
