An outfitter who also produces an outdoor television show in Canada has four openings for black bear. He has been baiting six sites for an upcoming episode and has already been seeing some bears. He specializes in moose and elk hunts but has accommodated five bear hunters since he began outfitting in 2003. Each hunter killed a big bear, the smallest weighing 350 pounds and with a 19-inch skull, the largest a 610-pound bruin with a 21 2/16-inch skull. He offers two types of hunts: a spot-stalk-hunt about three hours west of Edmonton, and a bait hunt about one hour west of Edmonton. Airport pickup is included in the price of each hunt. Accommodations are in a log cabin, and meals are ranch-style. Fishing is also excellent and is included in the price of the hunt. Walleye fishing typically yields about 100 fish per day, and there are also some big northern pike in the 10 to 30 pound range. He prefers to hunt during the last half of May, preferably starting about May 18. Most bears are black, but there are some color-phase animals.
