NW British Columbia: Boars average close to 7 feet and grow up to 8 feet. You can take two bears. $2,500 and up. Western Alberta: Spot-and-stalk hunt produced seven bears for five hunters in 2004. Excellent trophies to 500 pounds, many colored bears. Manitoba: This fall or spring hunt typically produces shooting for all hunters. In 2004 all spring and fall hunters tagged out with half the customers using bow and arrow. Bears average about 300 pounds. The biggest in 2004 weighed 485 pounds. British Columbia hunt behind hounds has yielded 100% hunter success for the past seven years, and those hunters who wanted two bears also filled their tags. A seven-day hunt is $2,500 with lodging and meals included, and you pay an extra $500 if you shoot two bears. Bruins average an estimated 350 pounds and sometimes reach 500 pounds. The average pelt squares 6 1/2 feet. "I chased bears there for seven days last year," the new owner of the concession said, "and I caught 12 bears, and some were cinnamons and blonds. I would say about 30 to 40 percent of the bears in this area are a color phase other than black." The outfit has enough guides and hounds that it can accommodate six hunters in camp. Bear season opens April 1, but the black bears aren't usually out until May 15. Hunting stays good until the end of June. "The country is easy to get around in," the outfitter said. "This is a good choice for people who have a hard time getting around the hills," he said. "We use pickups and four-wheelers on all the logging roads." Hunt BL815. |
Northern Alberta: 30 hunters took 58 bears in spring '04 with 11 going over 7 foot. Saskatchewan: Last spring all five hunters scored. In 2003 only one of 10 spring hunters did not score, and he was an AHC bowhunter, who it and lost a bear on the first hunt. That bear was taken by another bowhunter four miles away the following week. Top end was 300 pounds; average about 200. Spring of 2002 produced 350 and 400 pound bears. Past years have produced 100% opportunity for both bow and rifle hunters. Stay in a 24x48 cabin in the hunting area.
