This trip is offered by a Hunts.Net Customer who bought a 2,500-acre ranch near Salmon, Idaho, and spent nearly $1 million to enclose it with 11 miles of high fence. He has owned it for six or seven years now and says he can offer one of the best preserve experiences available due to the size of his ranch, the variety of cover and the scenic beauty of the area. He also offers chukar and pheasant hunting to his elk hunters at no extra charge.
"Hunters really like it when they get here," said the rancher, Jim. "The terrain is mostly rolling hills from 6,000 to 7,400 feet in elevation with timber, mostly quaking aspen and timber thickets in the higher country and high sage mostly in the lower country. Two live creeks run through the ranch. We can often spot the elk at a distance and then plan a stalk, using the terrain to our advantage. We have a lodge and can sleep 10 men. We have a full-time cook along with two trout ponds stocked with rainbows. This fall they will weigh three to four pounds. The ponds are probably ½ acre apiece and are spring-fed.
"We can hike to the elk, or we can take the hunter on an ATV to the elevation where we see the elk. We book a lot of hunters from the south and from Ohio and Missouri. "Our bulls go from three or four points on a side all the way up to really big bulls. We've taken some huge animals that have scored as much as 440 points. "The ranch consists of three old homesteads. We've been fixing up all the old buildings on the homesteads. The lodge itself is one of the old buildings. We have a company store on the ranch. We sell shirts, hats, coats, and jewelry. I take the hunters out personally." |
