New Mexico trophy area offers superb elk hunting

This hunt takes place in one of the premier trophy elk areas in the United States. Rich LaRocco of Hunts.Net was lucky enough to draw a tag for this unit and shot a bull scoring between 330 and 340 after passing up about 60 bulls, half of them 6x6s. His partner shot the first 6x6 he could, which was a 290-class bull, even though there half a dozen bigger bulls within view. For many years this unit has been managed to provide quality elk hunting for trophy bulls. You must draw a license to hunt this unit -- there are no landowner permits. The odds of drawing a license are low. The terrain varies from high elevation mountains to lower rolling country. The elk are usually bugling during the bow season and the first rifle elk hunt. We think this is a good hunt if you would be happy with a bull in the 280 to 320 range. We have heard of bulls scoring 350 and 360 but they are rare.

Few bulls score much over 330. The land is public, but it is managed as a trophy hunt similarly to bordering ranches.
