An outfitter we've known for years was not getting any elk permits on a low-land ranch in the southern part of the state, so he petitioned for some permits in 2006. The state finally issued permits in Novermber. He ended up taking four hunters, two a week before Christmas and two after Christmas. The first pair of hunters stayed a day and half, killed a six-point and missed a nice bull and found six bulls. The first hunter after Christmas shot a six-point bull in the first half-day of his hunt on Dec. 26. The next hunter, 85 years old, got a five point the next day during his first hunting day. The outfitter has had good luck on this ranch in years past but always had to find hunters who could draw the tag. He expects to get a handful of permits in 2007 and will take two hunters at a time for $7,000.
