Draw a tag or buy a landowner voucher to hunt trophy elk in southern New Mexico |

This hunt is offered by one of our long-time outfitters, who has produced a high success rate on mature bulls for many years. He conducts hunts on well-managed public land as well as on a 50,000-acre private ranch. Both hunts produce some really big bulls with several animals scoring over 350 B&C most years. One year he produced seven bulls from 350 to 403 B&C. About half the bulls score 300 or more on public land hunts, and about half the bulls killed on his ranch hunt score 330 to 380. Hunter success on rifle hunts is between 70 and 90 percent almost every year and depends mostly on the hunter's shooting ability and trophy standards. The landowner voucher is included in the price of the ranch hunt, so you do not need to apply for and draw a tag in the state's annual computer permit lottery. You can hunt with a rifle on the ranch from from early September through mid-November. You may apply for a tag on the public land hunt, or you can buy a landowner voucher. The biggest bulls on public land are just as big as the biggest elk on the ranch, but the average is better on the ranch. |
The odds of drawing a tag on public land vary from about 10 percent up to about 50 percent, depending on the hunting season. Early rifle hunts and late bow hunts are most in demand.
You'll stay in a ranch house or cabin. Meals are prepared by a cook. Most hunting is conducted in areas where you will be transported by four-wheel-drive to hunting areas, where you'll hunt on foot. In one zone the outfitter uses horses to get his hunters into position. |
