Utah is one of the best states for elk hunts. Not only does it produce world-class trophies in some of its limited-entry zones, but it also offers landowner and conservation vouchers, over-the-counter tags in some areas, well-managed private land, including its successful Cooperative Wildlife Management Unit program on deeded ranches. You must apply for a tag by the end of January to hunt some areas; other areas are open to hunters purchasing an over-the-counter tag; however, all tags sell ou before the season. Utah rifle elk hunts during the rut One of our Utah outfitters has a hunt on two ranches that are part of the state's Cooperative Wildlife Management Unit. "Our hunters see a lot of elk on this hunt," he said, "and most hunters should be able to kill a six-point bull. Most bulls score 280 to 300 Boone and Crockett points, and sometimes there will be a 340 class bull. But we see a lot of elk, and you should be into elk every day. " The fee is $5,000 plus a $2,000 kill fee and includes trailer or wall tent accommodations and meals. Hunts can be scheduled anytime in September or early October. Hunt EK4505. |
Utah combo elk/mule deer hunt
Utah offers a unique combination deer/elk permit, which allows a regular season elk hunter to take a deer in the northern part of the state as well as a bull elk in an open zone where branched-antler bulls are legal during general seasons. One of our customers, Brian Forrester, drew such a permit. in 2009. We lined up Brian, who is a track coach at the University of Akron, with an outfitter who hunts private land, and the results are shown above. Click on the photos for larger images. This hunt doesn't cost much more than a single hunt for one species. The outfitter charges his regular rate for elk, which varies according to the quality of the ranch you select ($5,000 to $8,000 one hunter per guide with a discount for 2x1), and then he adds the second animal for a modest trophy fee. You can apply as a party of two for this hunt. Book now for 2011. |
