Elk hunts, expired listings, 2006 and 2007

The following hunts may no longer be offered. Call for availability and updated prices and success rates.

SE Idaho: Rifle hunting lease on two ranches totaling 12,000 acres is $3,000 a person and includes a landowner voucher in case you don't draw a tag. Strictly unguided. If you draw a tag (50% chance), you can let a friend use the landowner voucher. Late Oct. Cabin quarters available at extra cost. 4 of 6 hunters have taken bulls averaging 300 B&C. The two who did not score saw bulls in the 340 to 380 class. Hunt EK500ID.

Northeastern New Mexico: Cow elk hunts, $1,000. Hunt EK333.

Southeastern Idaho: Rancher/outfitter offers guided rifle hunts for $2,500, drop camps for $1,500

Special draw permits: Best hunts for the money

Southwestern Colorado: Several ranches are available for small groups of hunters for self-guided hunting. One ranch accommodates groups of up to four on the first and fourth seasons. In 2004 all hunters took bulls up to 280 B&C, and most were six-pointers, but that is unusual. $1,750 a hunter per season, including the use of an old house. Archery hunts are $2,500 and can be better. A she second ranch is small and should be hunted by a couple of pals. Hunter success has been high. Rifle hunts are $1,500, while bow and muzzleloader hunts are $1,000. Hunt EKUN72.

Utah cow elk hunt from $600

Southwestern Montana: Combo hunt includes mule deer or whitetail and an elk, only $2,500 for four days. Private land hunt. High success on deer, 50% average success on elk. Mostly small bulls. Hunt EK170DI.

Central Oregon: An outfitter has two bull elk permits for an 8,000-acre private ranch inside the Ochoco unit about 100 miles east of Prineville. He is offering a guided five-day hunt in late October with ranch house lodging and meals for $3,750 a person plus the state tag. He said 350 and 360-class bulls have been seen on the ranch, but hunters would be more realistic to expect a chance at a 280 to 300-class animal. Ask about Hunt EK5414.

Alberta outfitter has archery elk slots, also deer and moose

One of our outfitters offers archery elk hunts during the September in an area where bulls typically range from 250 to 320 B&C with an occasional 350 plus. Prices start at $3,000 a person with one guide per pair of hunters. He also has whitetail archery hunts in October ($2,800 2x1 or $3,500 1x1). He also offer mule deer bow hunts. This area produces Boone and Crockett-class muleys and whitetails. Most hunters should see whitetails scoring 150 or more and muleys scoring in the high 160s or more. The outfitter lives only 10 minutes from the zone and within an hour of almost any place he hunts in zone, so he knows many landowners and has permission to hunt some excellent pieces of property.

Colorado: Landowner permits allow do-it-yourself hunting in Colorado's quality units, $3,000 to $5,000

SE Idaho, $2,500: Guided hunts, 50% hunter success, public land

NM landowner permits, $4,000-$5,000: Transferable landowner voucher good for one of the state's finest trophy bull zones. 350 to 400-class bulls taken yearly.

NW New Mexico: Transferable permit for hard-working do-it-yourselfers

December hunt in New Mexico produces six bulls for seven hunters: This hunt takes place in a northern unit where the outfitter has landowner permits for customers who don't draw a tag. Six of seven hunters took bulls in 2005, including a 323 6x5, four six-points in the 250-300 class, and a 5x5. The unsuccessful customer hunted only two days. This hunt is $5,500, which includes the landowner voucher. Hunt EK914WJ.

Westwide: Best trophy hunts for the money are in areas where all tags are issued by computer lottery.

Northern Utah: Trespass permits for rifle and muzzleloader elk hunters

Alberta:

Elk/muley combo hunt in quality zone Elk/mule deer combo hunt with one hunter per guide

Colorado: Landowner permits allow hunting in Colorado's better elk, deer and pronghorn units

Western Montana: 14,000-acre private ranch typically produces well on 5x5 and 6x6 bulls. The first week has averaged 90% and the second weed has averaged 75% for 10 years. Best bull in '04 was a 340-class 7x7. $5,000 for five days, 2x1 guide service, lodge and meals included.

Hunt one of Idaho's quality elk units without having to draw a tag

A percentage of the elk tags in Idaho's better areas, where the bulls tend to be bigger because of limited hunting pressure, are allocated for the use of outfitters' customers. It used to be that you had to draw a tag in the annual computer lottery to take these hunts. Here is an opportunity for as many as four elk hunters in 2005. (See below the pictures for more details.)

The outfitter can book four hunters a year without going through the drawing, and all those slots are available this year, but you must book right away to meet the May 31 tag purchase deadline. In 2004 the outfitter accommodated four men from Ohio, and they missed a big 340 class bull and took a 6x7 and a 6x6. The fourth hunter, who is handicapped by the loss of an eye, saw elk but did not get a crack at the bull of his dreams. This hunt is $3,500 a person with two hunters per guide in 2005. You'll hunt as many as seven full days beginning Oct. 9 from a wall tent base camp that provides horseback access to gated logged-off areas in the central part of the state. There are some big whitetails in the area, and you can buy a deer tag and hunt bucks simultaneously at no extra charge. Or you can book a rifle deer hunt during the rut in November for $3,000. Tags, license and sales tax are not included in hunt prices. The outfitter will pick you up at the airport in Lewiston, Idaho, at no extra charge. Incidentally, if you're looking for a big cougar, this is a good place to consider. The former world record came from this unit, and two of the top five cats currently came from this mountain range. Ask about Hunt EK1042.

NW Colorado: High-success backcountry guided combo includes deeer and bear

Northwestern Colorado: 120,000 private acres yielded 58 bulls for 59 hunters in '04, $4,950 a person

Utah elk hunt available for a party of two

A 14,000-acre Utah ranch is taking four bull elk hunters this year. Two rifle spots are available during the rut in late September or early October. The outfitter expects both hunters to have opportunities to shoot five and six-point bulls. He took only two hunters on the property last year, and they both filled their tags on nice bulls but regretted not holding out for some of the bulls that saw later. Price: $5,500. Ask about Hunt EK336GA.

22,000-acre lease offers 270-320 class bulls in northern Colorado with chance for bigger

Southeastern Colorado: Nine hunters the past two years have taken nine six-point bulls (best five scored 320, 325, 328, 340 and 350). $6,500. No preference points required. 30,000 private acres. Hunt EK11.

Utah trophy area: Hunt a unit famous for big bulls, tags go to the highest bidder

New Mexico public land hunts with guaranteed landowner vouchers are $6,500. Hunts start around October 10th. Drawing odds about 35%, mid-April drawing deadline.

Utah: Private ranch yields 100 percent success past 12 years with almost all bulls scoring 300 to 375 B&C points

Southeastern Utah: Only one hunter has been allowed on this ranch in the past 10 years, and he killed a bull that scored over 400 B&C. You'll be hunting bulls in the 380 to 400 class. You can hunt with a rifle during the rut. Free-ranging elk eligible for Boone and Crockett listing. Price not set but probably $15,000 to $17,000. Call for details.

Utah: High success, private land, six-point bulls

Utah: Mid-Sept. to Oct. 6. 24 bulls for 24 hunters in '04. Biggest grossed 342 B&C. 42,000 private acres. 80:100 bull:cow ratio. Hunters typically see 20+ bulls a day. 5 days, 2x1 hunter:guide ratio, $8,500, lodge quarters. Hunt EK255.

New Mexico: 25,000 private acres, high success on 300 to 390 class bulls. Best four in '04 grossed 352, 368, 377, 391.

Nevada/Utah line: 100,000-acre Indian Reservation provides 100% hunter success almost every year on bulls averaging 350 to 370 B&C. Early Sept.-early Oct. rut dates. 5 days, $17,500. Hunt EK90GS.

Northeastern NM: Ranch provides high success on 300-class bulls, booked through '06

Special January trophy hunt yielded bulls scoring 398 and 374 last year

Northern Utah ranch averages 350 B&C bulls. Mid-September rifle hunts typically produce 100 percent hunter success on big bulls with some bulls grossing over 370. Most hunters see many six-point bulls. $13,000 a person for five days with one hunter per guide and cabin quarters. Booked through '05. Hunt EK90DE.

Utah management hunt yields high success on old 5x5 and 5x6 bulls averaging a little over 300 B&C. The biggest bull in '04 was a 350-class 5x6. The outfit takes six hunters a year. $6,800 for five days in late September. Hunt EK90MG.

NM, $3,500: 5-day guided hunts. Many bulls over 300. Details.

Northeastern New Mexico:

Utah elk: A hunt provider with leases in northern Utah is offering trespass permits for rifle elk hunting. Prices vary from $750 to $2,000, depending on the ranch. These permits are valid on his private leases, which are in units where you can take any bull. Due to early snowstorms in the higher summering terrain, he expects the hunting to be excellent this year on his properties which are several thousand feet lower in elevation than the higher mountains to the north and east of his leases. We had two youth hunters draw an early season (September) tag for one of these leases a couple of years ago, and they both killed branched-antler bulls, so elk can be on the ranch even in mild weather.
