Wilderness east of Yellowstone yields big Wyoming bull elk

This is one of the most enjoyable hunts I've ever taken. Not only is this a wilderness hunt in one of the most gorgeous areas on earth, but the hunting is great, too. The outfitter is well-organized and puts on a good show. I asked for an inexperienced bowhunting guide so that I could do the bugling myself and was able to call in seven bulls in four days. My 6x6, which I killed at 17 yards, was the third biggest bull I called in close.

Archery season usually starts in late August or early September, and rifle season usually starts about September 10 in this part of northwest Wyoming near the Yellowstone border.

Typically everyone has the opportunity to harvest a bull. Hunters ride by horseback 24 miles into a remote wilderness to the tent camp in the famous Thorofare area.

License is on a draw basis, but the odds of drawing a tag in the more expensive so-called special drawing are excellent, and you can apply for preference points if you want to assure yourself of a tag in a future year.

This is a traditional elk hunt that produces some big bulls in the top end of the Boone and Crockett book, but the average is much closer to 300 B&C.
