Hunt a free-ranging elk herd on sprawling Colorado ranchland

We've booked hunters with this outfitter for about 10 years, and during that time he has expanded his leases to cover 120,000 private acres in northwestern Colorado near Craig. One of the ranches is 58,000 acres. Seasons run from Sept. 1-Dec. 31. Hunters consistently enjoy a high success rate on mature bull elk. There were 43 hunters in 2001, and they killed 39 6x5 and 6x6 bulls. Because the ranch is enrolled in the state's "Ranching for Wildlife" program, the outfitter can use his elk hunting permits over 3 1/2 months, giving each hunter a quality experience. He typically takes no more than six hunters at a time, meaning you'll have many square miles to yourself. He charges a bit more for his hunts that begin in September because those dates allow hunters to enjoy the typically easier hunting during the rut or bugling season. Some of the early hunts are run from a high-country horse camp, which allows hunters to concentrate their efforts on the 30,000-acre high-altitude portions of the ranch. You'll go as high as 10,000 feet in elevation and hunt scenic terrain that features meadows and dark timber.

Later the guides use trucks to reach the more open lower terrrain. In November and early December hunters usually see a lot of elk in the aspen, oakbrush, and sage cover, mostly at the 6,000 to 8,000-foot level. One of our customers on a November deer hunt reported seeing more than 1,000 elk with some big bulls.

You can add mule deer or antelope. The muley bucks are typically in the 20- to 24-inch class, while the antelope average about 14 inches and score an average of 72 to 73 Boone and Crockett points.

He also doesn't allow hunters to shoot coyotes, but if you drive your own vehicle, coyote hunting is available on nearby BLM land.

Update: A few openings in 2005: Oct. 10-14, 17-21 and Dec. 5-9. 2 to 4 slots each date.
