Alberta elk/muley combo hunt in quality zone |

An outfitter we know has bought a non-resident elk hunting allocation in a zone near Hinton, Alberta. He gets one tag a year. In the past two years he has had two hunters, and one of them killed a bull that reportedly scored 280 B&C. You can add mule deer and whitetail deer on this hunt.
"Resident tags are really limited, so the bulls have a chance to grow big. I would give anything for 20 tags there, but only one non-resident tag is available. Not only are there some huge bulls, but the zone also has lots of elk. It's not like some of the other trophy elk zones, which have elk only in pockets and lots of country with no elk. There is an excellent herd in this zone. It's not hard to locate elk. It's not a matter of trying to find bulls, especially during the rut. It's not unusual for this zone to produce the largest resident-killed bull of the year, and some of those bulls have gone in the 380s and 390s. I wouldn't care if a hunter wanted to pass up a 320 or 330 bull because there are definitely bigger ones. In some of the other zones, you need to think really hard before you pass up any 6x6 bull. Not here. A bull in the 330s or 340s is a good possibility. There are also some really good mule deer and whitetails." This is not a ranch hunt and though it is not as physically difficult as some hunts, you should consider this hunt only if you're in good physical condition. The outfitter will act as guide and will locate bulls by bugling after dark so that he'll know where to hunt at daylight. You should expect to cover a lot of country by four-wheel-drive and to hike one to four miles from roads. Another good winter means the animals entered the antler-growing season in excellent condition, allowing them to channel more nutrition to antler growth. Expect to stay in a camp trailer. The guide will prepare the meals, but with only one hunter in camp at this price expect to help with camp chores. |
Booked for 2006. Openings remain for 2007.
