Hunt trophy elk in New Mexico's Gila |

We've worked with this outfitter for many years, and he consistently produces some of the largest bull elk taken in North America. He hunts primarily on public land in the Gila National Forest area. If you fail to draw a permit in the state's lottery drawing, you can buy a landowner permit. He takes quite a few hunters each year during the various seasons in the five or six units he hunts. Archery: In 2000 his 52 archers got 19 bulls, mostly 5x5s and 6x6s. the biggest grossed 363, 359, 357 and 347. In 1999 his 54 archers tagged 26 bulls scoring up to 392 Pope and Young points (gross), and 21 of the bulls sported 6x6 racks averaging 315 P&Y. There were 56 bowhunters in 1997, and they took 19 bulls, including 10 scoring at least 300 Pope and Young points. |

Archers should be prepared to shoot accurately up to 45 yards. Blackpowder: Muzzleloader success in 2000 was exactly 50% for 30 hunters. The better bulls scored in the 340s and 350s, a little down from normal. Most were 6x6s. His blackpowder hunters in 1999 killed 17 bulls for 30 hunters, and the best bull scored 381. Keep in mind that even though these units produce some of the biggest elk in the world every year, the hunting is not easy. The country is big and rough, and the better your physical condition the better you'll do. Rainfall is a major factor in antler growth in this part of the Southwest. For example, antler size was down a bit in 2000 due to dry conditions during the spring and summer of 2000. Hunt EK42. |
