Hunt grizzly in Alaska's Arctic National Wildlife Refuge | ||||||||||||||||||||||
This hunt takes place in the famed Arctic National Wildlife Refuge, where the outfitter boasts a hunt er success rate of virtually 100 percent. "There's always a chance of bad weather ruining a hunt or spraining an ankle," he said, "but when things go normally, my hunters take bears that average 7 and a half feet, and we've taken them up to 8 foot 7. That was a Boone and Crockett bear, but don't expect one that big because he was the biggest one I've ever seen in the area. "We typically shoot the first mature bear we see, and we don't shoot anything but mature bears. A typical mature male will square about eight feet, and a typical mature female will square about seven feet." You'll fly into a base camp but may spike camp from backpack tents. The outfitter is one of a few licensed to operate in the refuge. His area is on the north slope of the Brooks Range and spreads to the Arctic Ocean. This area is also home to the Porcupine Herd of barren ground caribou. You can take a caribou at an extra fee.
