Two self-guided mule deer slots on Montana ranch "I saw 30 to 40 bucks a day when I hunted this ranch," said Chuck Johnson of Utah. "There were quite a few bucks in the 170s, and I saw a couple of bigger ones. Unfortunately, I had already shot my buck when I saw a giant that I think might have scored 200. But I was happy with my buck, which was a really heavy four-pointer. The ranch takes only four hunters a year on 5,000 acres, so it's a really good quality hunt. The ranch is pretty flat with deep coulees where the deer hide in brush that reminds me a lot of the plumb thickets you see in western Kansas." Chuck was slated to take two of those openings but recently changed jobs and can't make it this fall. Price for a trespass permit is $1,500 a person plus license and tag. The landowner allocation certificate must be sent to the state by next Monday (March 15), so call immediately if you want this hunt. Hunt MD4126. The landowner said you should be able to take a mature buck. If you're selective, you should have an opportunity to take an eight-point Eastern count rack in the 95 to 120 range, possibly a bit bigger. Montana elk hunt available for 2010 One of our long-time outfitters operates an elk hunt on a private ranch near Philipsburg. Here's a note from him: "I have openings for the first week of rifle season and two openings for peak rut of bowhunting. These are first class hunts. We have a huge lodge, great food and relative for elk hunting, easy terrain and hunting. My first week rifle hunts almost always tag out. We were six for six last year -- two six-points, one nice 5 and the other two bulls were 2 1/2 year olds. This week has always been sold out years in advance in the past, but we had a group of six back out this year. I have two, possibly three hunters, who seem interested in it right now. This is the type of hunt that older guys and those who are not in the best of shape can be well taken care of and probably kill a bull that is not in a pen. The bowhunters will have shot opportunities. Price for the rifle hunt is $5,500 (not including tag). The bowhunt is $4,000, no tag." Details. Utah mule deer hunt on private land It's not too late to book a mule deer hunt in the Beehive State's northern region, where tags have always been left over after the permit drawing. We have openings for one archery hunter and two muzzleloader hunters with a rancher who operates on his family's land bordering the famous Deseret Land & Livestock Ranch. "The deer are recovering pretty well from the tough winter we had a few years ago," he said. "We saw a lot more bucks this past season than the season before, and we're having such a mild winter this year that I'm sure this fall will be very good. I took only two hunters last fall, and one got a 178 B&C, and we saw some bigger bucks. I've seen some very big bucks this past winter. A bordering landlocked state section went up for auction a couple of years ago, and I made a deal with the new owner that I would give him an easement if I could take my hunters there for two years. This fall is the last year for me to do that so I would really like to take a couple of hunters in August and September when there are some good bucks there." The price is $3,000, which is a good deal less than most other ranches in the area. Lodging in a bunkhouse is included as well as guide service by the rancher and his son. Hunters can provide their own food or pay extra for meals prepared by the rancher's family. Hunt MD4536. "Our hunters see a lot of elk on this hunt," he said, "and most hunters should be able to kill a six-point bull. Most bulls score 280 to 300 Boone and Crockett points, and sometimes there will be a 340 class bull. But we see a lot of elk, and you should be into elk every day. " The fee is $5,000 plus a $2,000 kill fee and includes trailer or wall tent accommodations and meals. Hunts can be scheduled anytime in September or early October. I think I could shoot a 190s class buck almost any year on this property. The ranch also has two members of the landowner's family who hunt, but they usually fill out in September or October. Openings available on our No. 1 rifle hunt for trophy whitetail bucks If you've been reading Hunts.Net for a few years, you'll probably remembering reading about our favorite Alberta outfitter, who consistently produces a high success rate on truly trophy-class bucks. Bucks usually average 155 to 160 with the bigger animals usually scoring well up in the Boone and Crockett Club record book. We have one customer who has taken two in the 190s. Hunters who are lucky enough to get a spot on his hunt have been reluctant to give up their spots. The outfitter was booked up five years in advance when we reserved four spots for 2010, and now it's time for us to fill those slots. The hunt is expensive, but if you want the best chance you'll probably ever have to tag a true wallhanger, this is probably it. Keep in mind that the average whitetail taken by a non-resident in Alberta or Saskatchewan scores between 130 to 140, and average hunter success is less than 50 percent. This is far better than the average Canadian deer hunt. Click here for more details. |
