The Chilcotin wilderness in British Columbia is well known for its healthy population of Canada moose. This outfitter operates from a main lodge at Moose Lake in the heart of prime moose habitat. He lives there year round, so he sees through the seasons. Each fall his hunters take several mature bulls from the lakeshore and in areas within horseback riding distance from the lodge. He has been in business for more than 30 years. His moose hunters averaged 98 percent success from 1999 through 2003.
This part of British Columbia has many lakes, which afford easy floatplane access to the outfitter's outpost camps. Moose thrive in the habitat provided by the lakes and the meadows that interconnect the lakes. Hunters ride horses or boats or backpack, depending on physical limitations. Some trips are from the lodge; some are from cabins or tents on remote lakes. The outfitter tries to match the hunter with the right guide in the right area. "We have successfully guided clients in all types of physical condition rom 14 to 80 years old," he said.
Antlers range from 40 to 55 inches wide. The guides skin and cape the animal, and the trophy and meat are flown to Anahim Lake, where there is a locker to process meat. You will have the opportunity to enjoy rainbow trout fishing. Fishing is good at most camps and excellent at the main lodge. If time and weather permit, you may charter the outfitter's floatplane for a salmon fishing trip on one of the good salmon rivers. The focus is on moose, but if see a black bear, you can shoot it for a $500 kill fee. No kill fee is charged for timber wolf.
