All this outfitter's rifle moose hunters have scored in the past six years and all but one of his bowhunters. In 2009 the largest bull was 56 inches wide, and the narrowest rack spread 43 inches. In 2008 the largest bull was 51 inches, and the smallest was 49 inches. One hunter had a chance at a 55 to 58-incher but pulled the trigger on an empty chamber. His biggest bull so far was 59 inches wide.

He operates in zones with good moose populations, including some zones where residents must draw tags but where he has guaranteed tags for non-residents. Hunts are six days long, and there is one guide per pair of hunters.  Meals and accommodations are included. He hunts an area where his guides drive four-wheel-drive roads to hunting locations and another area where he flies hunters by helicopter. On the chopper hunt, you have the option of staying in wall tents in the hunting area or flying out each day to stay in a cabin. You must have two hunters to book the fly-in hunt. The helicopter flights are not included in the price of the hunt.

The hunt takes place in a zone with only 32 tags with only four of them allocated for nonresident hunters.

"Because of the small number of hunters, there are a lot of nice bulls in my zone," the outfitter said. "We usually show about 12 bulls to each hunter. Some of them want to take the first representative bull they see, but I would like to see more of them hold out for big bulls. We've been trying to get one of the 60-inch bulls in the area, but so far the biggest we have killed is 52 inches."

You can add a whitetail to your moose hunt for an additional $2,000.

The outfitter said the hunt is physically easy enough that hunters who can't hike typically take nice bulls.

"I can say that a hunter can realistically expect to have chances at 45 inch bulls, but there are bigger moose for hunters who can hunt harder and hold out longer.

"On whitetails I tell hunters that a 150 Boone and Crockett or bigger buck is realistic, but there are much bigger bucks. My cousin got a 252 nontypical two years ago, and that same year another hunter got a typical that scored 196.

"Three years ago I had three hunters for whitetails, and they each got a buck scoring 160 or better. We don't have any mule deer tags left for this year, but we usually have mule deer hunters pass on bucks under 170. "

The outfitter's traditional moose hunt is booked in 2010 and 2011. However, he also can take hunters into a new area that is reachable by helicopter.

"I would expect to take bigger bulls on the average in the remote fly-in camp," the outfitter said. "We want to hunt that area in November because we can get around then, and the moose are much easier to hunt in November."
