This is one of the best places in Alaska to find an outsize moose. The outfitter operates in extremely remote country and uses a Super Cub equipped with tundra tires to access areas that floatplanes can't reach. Consequently he produces some big bulls with many of them in the 65-inch to 70-inch-plus class. He said most hunters see two to 14 bulls during a hunt. His success dropped this past fall when only two of eight customers killed bulls. Due to unseasonably warm weather the bulls were not responding as well to calling as usual. The outfitter said they saw several bulls traveling along, and they ignored calls. In normal weather hunter success is about 75%. The outfitter's main camp is about 90 miles northwest of Iliamna in western Alaska. He has taken bulls as big as 73 inches in this area. You pay a $1,000 trophy fee if you take a black bear on any of his hunts. There are also some big brown bears in this area. The outfitter has a high success rate on brown bear in the spring, but bear hunting is so unpredictable in the fall that the outfitter hesitates to book hunters specifically for brownies then. However, moose or moose/caribou hunters may take a brown bear for an additional trophy fee. Hunt MS102.
