Alberta farm-country moose hunt | ||||||||||||||||||||||
|
This hunt takes place in mixed farm and riverbottom country southeast of Edmonton. This area yields some big moose because limited hunting pressure allows some bulls to reach the age necessary to grow large antlers. All moose tags, resident as well as non-resident, are limited by the province. Residents must draw a permit to hunt the area. Non-residents do not have to draw. The outfitters gets a quota of two tags a year. He had one tag a year until 2005, and now he has two. Bulls are typically 45 to more than 50 inches wide, and the area has produced some bulls in the high 50s. I've hunted mule deer and whitetails with this outfitter. He and his brother guided me during the 10 days I was there, and we saw several moose and lots of moose sign. The bulls were living mostly in patches of timber surrounded by cropfields as well as along narrow riverbottoms. This is a physically easy moose hunt, as you drive around, looking for tracks. Then the guides places you on an exit route and makes a drive to push the animals into the open. The outfitter solicits the help of neighbors as well as his deer guides, who call him when they see moose crossing fields and entering brush. |
