An outfitter we've worked with for 15 years or more specializes in mule deer hunts on private land. He leases more than 250,000 private acres, which hold representative pronghorn antelope and some nice whitetail deer as well as lots of mature muley bucks. His hunter success rate is excellent. In 2005 he accommodated a total of 50 mule deer hunters on all his hunts, and they took 48 bucks. Most hunters took bucks 22 to 27 inches wide, and 25 to 30 of the deer taken in 2005 scored 155 to 170 B&C points. His prices vary according to the season. The best time to hold out for a big muley is during the rut. He offers a premium trophy-quality deer hunt on a 50,000-acre property near Miles City. Pronghorns are typically in the 12 to 14-inch category, though there are a few big ones. The outfitter comes from a ranching family and hires local guides. He is very personable and has always been honest with us.
