Utah outfitter offers elk, moose and mule deer hunts on private CWMU leases in northern Utah

This outfitter operates on a private lease that is managed as a Cooperative Wildlife Management Unit (CWMU) in northern Utah. In exchange for limiting the harvest of bucks and bulls, the ranch is allowed a 60-day extended rifle season. On his main 8,000-acre ranch he offers a five-day elk/mule deer combo anytime between Sept. 15 and Oct. 15. "The elk on this ranch are usually in the 250 to 300 class," he said. "The biggest I saw last year was 320. There's no reason not to go 100 percent on elk if you can shoot and hunt. Deer hunting is tougher during that period, but this ranch has produced some great bucks in the past few years. The outfitter gets one Shiras moose tag per year and expects to take a mature trophy bull if the hunter is willing to pass on smaller animals. In 2005 his moose hunter had been on several moose hunts in Canada and had never seen a bull, so he was happy with a mediocre bull.
