Slots available for mule deer hunt on private rangeland in northern Utah

2006 trophy.

This hunt takes place on several small private cattle ranches and farms between Morgan, Utah, and the Wyoming line. The properties border public land or higher elevation ranches, so the last few days of the October season are usually best.

Last year all the outfitter's guided hunters took mature bucks from 24 to 29 inches wide. Several had extra points. He expects to do well again this year for a few reasons. For example, one of his ranches, which used to be available

only to unguided hunters, now has been added to the acreage he is utilizing for his guided hunters. Both Rich LaRocco and Chuck Johnson of Hunts.Net have taken nice bucks on that additional acreage. Also, deer survival was excellent this past winter due to generally mild weather. And antler growth should be superb due to plenty of rainfall this spring.

Beginning June 14 you can buy a tag over the counter for this hunt. Tags sold out last year, so call right away if you're interested.

Guided rifle hunts are $4,500 with one hunter per guide for 4 1/2 days. An economy hunt is 3 1/2 days long with one guide per two hunters and costs $3,000. Muzzleloader hunts are the same price but last six days.

We have openings in Utah for semi-guided as well as guided hunts on private property. An East Canyon property is open to four hunters during the first four days of the season and four hunters during the last four days of the season. There is some limited hunting by the landowner's family. A guide will show you around the property and will show you how to hunt. The hunt is $2,000 and does not included lodging or meals. You can camp on the property or rent wall tents from the outfitter. Guides are available for $300 per day with a minimum of three days, and the guide can be shared by two, three or four hunters. The outfitter is offering two guided hunts on a piece of property that produced a Boone and Crockett typical in 2007. This property has yielded a buck over 190 in three of the last five years. The guided hunt is $5,000 a person with two hunters per guide for four days. This area tends to improve as the season progresses because deer move onto the land from bordering public land. You cannot expect to see a 190 buck, but great deer do live in the area. I glassed this ranch for one day during the season in October and saw about a dozen bucks bucks. I've hunted the property once (in 2004) and shot a beautiful mature four-pointer the only day I had available.

Chuck Johnson of Hunts.Net got this buck in October 2007. His taxidermist has measured it and thinks it will net above 190 B&C and make the record book. Chuck killed a buck that scored in the high 170s the last time he hunted this property in 2004.

Terrain
Dates
Most leases are in foothills and mountains from 6,000 to 9,500 feet with most hunting from 7,500 to 8,500 feet. Vegetation varies from oakbrush, sagebrush and alfalfa to aspens and conifers.
Rifle hunters can start hunting Oct. 24 or Oct. 25, whichever they prefer.

Muzzleloader season starts Sept. 26 and ends Oct. 4. You can pick your dates.

Accommodations, meals
Licenses

Accommodations and meals are not included. Most hunters stay in motels with reasonable rates and eat restaurant meals. On guided hunts you'll be picked up each morning at the motel and dropped off each evening. You may camp in specific areas.

In Utah a deer license includes the hunting permit and tag. The $263 license is not included in the price of the hunt. Licenses are available over the counter after June 14. You must have hunter's safety if born after 1965.
Travel
Notes

The outfitter can arrange to have you shuttled between the airport and hunting camp for $100 total.

There's a $500 penalty if you shoot a buck with antlers less than 20 inches wide (outside spread).
