Bowhunt mule deer and whitetail deer in West Texas and take an aoudad ewe as a free bonus animal along with wild hogs

One of our favorite outfitters has never taken any deer hunters on his personal hunting lease, but this year he and his two partners decided to take two bowhunters. This ranch produces some very nice muleys. The biggest they have taken on the place scored 194 points. The biggest last year scored 174 and the year before 173. They have had the lease five or six years. The ranch, near Fluvanna, covers 10,000 acres and includes some wheatfields that draw bucks from the surrounding desert habitat. "I can proably show bowhunters three or four good bucks a day," the outfitter said. "In the evening the deer come out of the canyons to the wheat on the ambush trails. We also can spot and stalk. Good opportunity to get more than one shot at a big deer. A big deer in that area is 155 plus. For bowhunting, anything 140 or better is a good deer, but you definitely could get chances at a bigger deer on this hunt. I've seen whitetails to 140 inches, but most of the good whitetails there are 120 to 130 Pope and Young. "There are a lot more mule deer than whitetail, but they both use the wheatfields, so if you're there hunting and a big whitetail walks out in front of you, you can take him. The lease went up, and so we decided to help pay for it by taking one or two bowhunters a year. This is also our main aoudad ranch, where we take guided aoudad hunters. We'll let the bowhunters shoot a female aoudad during their hunt." Accommodations are in a heated cabin with running water. The price is $2,500 a person or a four-day hunt. Meals are included.
