Lottery-permit mule deer hunts
Some of the best trophy mule deer hunting is in game management units
composed mostly of public land where a limit on hunting permits is imposed
by the state or province. If you intend to try to draw a limited permit in a computer lottery, you can
increase your odds of drawing a permit by applying in three to five states
each year. Drawing odds vary from unit to unit, depending on how much publicity
a unit has garnered, but the more popular units usually generate between
10 and 100 applications for every available permit. If you know where to
look, however, you can apply for permits with better drawing odds and good

Southeastern Utah: High success rate on 24 to 30-inch bucks in the better units in southeastern Utah. $3,500 for up to 10 days with one hunter per guide. Hunt MD429.
Kaibab, Arizona: One of our long-time outfitters last fall took five bucks that green-scored 200 to 223 B&C gross. Don't expect a deer that big, but this is one area that has truly trophy-size bucks, and this outfitter consistently does well. $4,000 for seven days with one hunter per guide. Hunt MD91.
Colorado, eastern plains: An outfitter we've known for 15 years has a private lease where he has taken several muleys in the 180 to 200 class. The hunt, priced at $4,500, is in early December. Accommodations are not included. A nearby ranch house provides accommodations at $65 a night, or you can stay in the town of Lyman, which has many motels in various price ranges.
