Hunt mule deer on the West Hills Cooperative Wildlife Management Unit in northern Utah | ||||||||||||||||||||||||
|
Bobbette Jones took this buck on her first day of hunting in 2005. This hunt takes place on 20,000 private acres in several ranches that have combined to form a Cooperative Wildlife Management Unit in northern Utah. The ranches are on a low mountain range with a maximum elevation of 7,000 feet. The range usually holds a healthy number of deer. Terrain is flat in areas, moderate in most areas and steep in some places. Vegetation is typically sagebrush with maplebrush draws and some slopes with juniper or aspen. Bucks in the 30-inch-plus range have come from these ranches, but most deer taken by hunters are in the 20 to 25-inch class. The bigger bucks most years are in the 25 to 28-inch class. You can opt between a guided hunt or a self-guided hunt. Neither hunt includes lodging and meals, which are available in a town about a mile from the ranch. Most hunters will see bucks every day. There is enough hunting pressure that the bigger bucks are wary and usually hold in tight cover. The last two weeks of the season typically produce the best success on bigger deer. A Hunts.Net customer in 2005 missed a 190-class buck during the last week. A neighbor during October shot a 7x5 32-incher that had been seen three different times on the CWMU. |
