The village of Cambridge Bay on Victoria Island bills itself as the muskox capital of the world. Cambridge Bay comes by
the title honestly because southern Victoria Island has a population 30,000 of the island's 45,000 muskoxen.
Safari Club International classifies all Island muskox as the Greenland race. This hunt has been 100 percent successful the past 15 years. Virtually all of the heads taken would qualify for the Pope and Young record book and the SCI record book.
The hunting is done from Cape Peel to Mount Pelly, on the southern coast of Victoria Island. Clients fly by regularly scheduled airline to the village of Cambridge Bay and from there travel by boat to the hunting area. The boat travel takes 4 to 6 hours.
This is the only area of Nunavut where the Greenland muskox can be hunted in August and September. This hunt is ideally suited for hunters who are concerned about the weather and temperatures of March or November muskox hunts.
Frost is common at night, but snow is unlikely and doesn't last when it falls. Daytimes are usually 35 to 45 degrees Fahrenheit.
You'll travel by boat, then walk inland. Some ATVs are used. Most hunters encounter fair numbers of animals within a few miles of the water.
You can be virtually assured of a good muskox bull even if you're an archery hunter. The boat and tents give the clients and guides mobility to move along the coast until game is found. Clients are expected to help with camp chores.
Muskox hunting on the tundra lends itself to classic bowhunting stalking. Bowhunters have had 100 percent hunter success on both the spring hunt and also this late summer hunt.
Rifle hunters can expect to bag a muskox in a day or two of hunting. It is not unusual to see 30 to 40 muskox in a day.
THE COST INCLUDES: Services of a licensed guide with a boat including all gas, and oil for the boat; camp meals; camping gear such as tent, foam mattress, stoves, pots, pans and dishes.
