Wyoming deer and elk hunts reduce Grey's River area reduces prices An outfitter we've used for years has decided to reduce his price from $4,000 to $3,500 for either elk or deer hunts. If you've already drawn a general season elk tag, give us a call. He took three elk hunters in 2009 and produced two bulls, including a nice one taken by the staff of an outdoor television show. Hunter success on elk is typically 75 to 80 percent. In 2008, for example, he got nine bulls for 13 hunters , and two of the hunters who did not tag out missed a total of 10 bulls. His only deer hunter in 2009 killed a buck with a rack spreading 29 3/4-inch and scoring 178 Boone and Crockett points. Four of his five 2008 deer hunters got nice bucks, including a 187 typical that was big for 2008, when horn growth was poor due to a tough winter in 2007. Most hunters on this hunt get a crack at a true wallhanger, and there's always a chance of taking a record-size bull in this rugged terrain. Hunts are by horseback and are conducted from a backcountry camp. Details. Spring hunts for Alaska Peninsula brown bear We have four openings for brown bear hunters from May 16-25 on the Alaska Peninsula. This has been a highly successful hunt and usually costs $18,800, but the outfitter has reduced the price to $16,000. Flights between Chignik and the hunting area are included in the hunt price. Expect to pay about $850 for the PennAir flight between Anchorage and Chignik. Hunt BR4951. Special rut rifle mule deer hunts in Utah This is one of the better opportunities anywhere to take a big muley in 2010. Hunting takes place on private property in the northern part of the state. The outfitter offered elk hunts there this past year and saw some great bucks. This year he will take four rifle deer hunters during the first part of the rut in early November. "I think we'll produce bucks from 170 to 200 B&C," he said. "The better the hunter can hike and shoot, the bigger the buck he'll most likely get. I think I could shoot a 190s class buck almost any year on this property. The ranch also has two members of the landowner's family who hunt, but they usually fill out in September or October. |
Montana elk hunt available for 2010 One of our long-time outfitters operates an elk hunt on a private ranch near Philipsburg. Here's a note from him: "I have openings for the first week of rifle season and two openings for peak rut of bowhunting. These are first class hunts. We have a huge lodge, great food and relative for elk hunting, easy terrain and hunting. My first week rifle hunts almost always tag out. We were six for six last year -- two six-points, one nice 5 and the other two bulls were 2 1/2 year olds. This week has always been sold out years in advance in the past, but we had a group of six back out this year. I have two, possibly three hunters, who seem interested in it right now. This is the type of hunt that older guys and those who are not in the best of shape can be well taken care of and probably kill a bull that is not in a pen. The bowhunters will have shot opportunities. Price for the rifle hunt is $5,500 (not including tag). The bowhunt is $4,000, no tag." Details. Two self-guided mule deer slots on Montana ranch "I saw 30 to 40 bucks a day when I hunted this ranch," said Chuck Johnson of Utah. "There were quite a few bucks in the 170s, and I saw a couple of bigger ones. Unfortunately, I had already shot my buck when I saw a giant that I think might have scored 200. But I was happy with my buck, which was a really heavy four-pointer. The ranch takes only four hunters a year on 5,000 acres, so it's a really good quality hunt. The ranch is pretty flat with deep coulees where the deer hide in brush that reminds me a lot of the plumb thickets you see in western Kansas." Chuck was slated to take two of those openings but recently changed jobs and can't make it this fall. Price for a trespass permit is $1,500 a person plus license and tag. The landowner allocation certificate must be sent to the state by next Monday (March 15), so call immediately if you want this hunt. Hunt MD4126. 2010 looks promising for western Montana whitetail hunt This outfitter expects his hunters this year to see more and bigger bucks on his private leases. " I was about half off for deer hunters last year," he said. "That should bode very well for 2010. There are a ton of good bucks carried over." Details. Utah combo elk/mule deer hunt Utah offers a unique combination deer/elk permit, which allows a regular season elk hunter to take a deer in the northern part of the state as well as a bull elk in an open zone where branched-antler bulls are legal during general seasons. One of our customers, Brian Forrester, drew such a permit. in 2009. We lined up Brian, who is a track coach at the University of Akron, with an outfitter who hunts private land, and the results are shown above. Click on the photos for larger images. This hunt doesn't cost much more than a single hunt for one species. The outfitter charges his regular rate for elk, which varies according to the quality of the ranch you select ($5,000 to $8,000 one hunter per guide with a discount for 2x1), and then he adds the second animal for a modest trophy fee. You can apply as a party of two for this hunt. Book now for 2010. Utah mule deer hunt on private land It's not too late to book a mule deer hunt in the Beehive State's northern region, where tags have always been left over after the permit drawing. Leftover tags sell out quickly when they become available in June, however, so you'll want your ducks in a row before then. We have openings for one archery hunter and two muzzleloader hunters with a rancher who operates on his family's land bordering the famous Deseret Land & Livestock Ranch. "The deer are recovering pretty well from the tough winter we had a few years ago," he said. "We saw a lot more bucks this past season than the season before, and we're having such a mild winter this year that I'm sure this fall will be very good. I took only two hunters last fall, and one got a 178 B&C, and we saw some bigger bucks. I've seen some very big bucks this past winter. A bordering landlocked state section went up for auction a couple of years ago, and I made a deal with the new owner that I would give him an easement if I could take my hunters there for two years. This fall is the last year for me to do that so I would really like to take a couple of hunters in August and September when there are some good bucks there." The price is $3,000, which is a good deal less than most other ranches in the area. Lodging in a bunkhouse is included as well as guide service by the rancher and his son. Hunters can provide their own food or pay extra for meals prepared by the rancher's family. Hunt MD4536. |
