Book late season mule deer hunt now for December 2012

Colorado bobcat/coyote hunt available in Jan./Feb.

Colorado outfitter fills two late season muley tags early, has one more available, book today, season ends Dec. 14

One of our rancher/outfitters called to say that both his late season rifle mule deer hunters filled their tags early, and so he is available to guide a hunter who wants his last license voucher. See the pix above. Both bucks were taken from the same herd. One was 29 inches wide, and other had broken off several tines while fighting or might have scored about 190. The outfitter has seen some bigger bucks recently. He is confident he can get his hunter a crack at a wallhanger. Call today for a fully guided hunt at $5,000. Details.

Outfitter has two openings on apple orchard hunt
This hunt takes place on a small piece of property that includes an apple orchard bordering the Mescalero Apache Indian Reservation in southern New Mexico. The landowner kept a voucher for himself this year and filled his tag this morning, shooting a mature 6x6 out of a herd of 13 bulls. The outfitter has guided eight hunters there during the past few years and produced seven trophy bulls. There's a chance of taking a giant bull on this hunt, but a hunter who doesn't want to go home without an elk should realistically expect to tag a bull in the 260 to 325 range. You may hunt any five consecutive days between now and Dec. 31. Price: $6,000 guided with one hunter per guided. The outfitter has two vouchers, which enable you to buy a tag directly from the state. Motel and meals are not included in the price. "This would make a great Christmas gift," the outfitter said. Hunt EK4731AO.

Report on late bow hunt for Utah elk

The archery hunt that we book in central Utah produced some shooting opportunities this year, but nobody killed a bull except the outfitter's son, who stalked and killed a 340-class bull on a public wildlife management area that borders the private ranchland where this hunt takes place. Several big bulls were seen, including a giant 6x7 and another huge 6x6. One problem was the mild weather. December turned out to be the driest on record, the exact opposite of the same month in 2010. Consequently, elk started moving back up the mountains and stopped hitting the haystacks that usually draw bulls close to hunting blinds. We finally decided to stalk bulls the last couple of days. Both of our hunters got close to bulls (15 and seven yards) but came away empty. Details.

Brown bear hunt on Alaska refuge

New Mexico landowner elk tag valid until Dec. 31
A landowner voucher is available for a mature bull on a small private ranch in the Johnson Mesa area of northern New Mexico. This area holds a lot of bulls in the 280 to 330 class with an occasional bigger bull. The ranch covers about 2,000 acres, but most of the bulls spend the winter in one canyon, according to a former outfitter who is a member of the landowning family. The permit is $2,500, and if you have a partner who would like to come along and hunt for cow elk, a single antlerless elk voucher is available for an additional $700. If you want a guide, the fee is $1,000 extra for five days. You could stay in a house with the guide. Unguided hunters will need to drive to a town for motel accommodations or bring their own camper or trailer. Ask about Hunt EK2806.
