Pronghorn antelope hunt offers high success, good trophies in southwestern Wyoming

An outfitter who has done a good job for us for several years offers a hunt on property we've hunted in southwestern Wyoming. You must draw a tag in the annual license lottery with applications due March 15. Before the preference point system started in 2006, about two-thirds of applicants in the special draw received a tag. We're guessing that a preference point would assure you a tag in the special drawing.

In 2006 this outfitter accommodated 14 hunters and took 14 bucks. A semi-guided hunt with four hunters per guide is $1,200 for three days (you supply your own tent and meals). A fully outfitted three-day hunt is $2,000 with two hunters per guide or $3,500 with one hunter per guide.

The average animal taken in '06 had 14-inch horns, and the biggest trophy was 15 1/2 inches long. The guided hunt is run from a tent camp, but you can stay in a town about 10 to 30 miles away if you prefer.

September and early October. You can combine antelope with mule deer hunts on the ranch or in northern Utah nearby.	Some antelope come to water sources, and others feed in cropfields, making them succeptible to bowhunting.
