Muzzleloader hunt offers good opportunity for huge antelope in New Mexico |

Two outfitters we know in New Mexico offer trophy blackpowder hunts on a 133,000-acre ranch in Unit 29 bordering Texas and the MacGregor military range. Despite the limited range of muzzleloaders, clients of both outfitters are usually 100% successful. One outfitter was 100% in 2000 with eight bucks for eight customers. Those bucks averaged 15 to 15.5 inches and the biggest bucks were more than 16 inches in horn length. The other outfitter took three customers in 2000, and on opening morning they killed three bucks grossing 82 to 84 B&C. The smallest of those bucks, taken by Randall Espinosa, had 16-inch horns and is pictured above. There are only 11 landowner permits and 21 public-drawing tags issued for this ranch. "There are a lot of really nice bucks in there," one outfitter said. "Usually we have to hunt till Sunday, but last year we got them right away. |
