Hunt Sitka blacktail deer on Kodiak Island in Alaska

This is a fun hunt run out of a nice lodge in Larsen Bay on Kodiak Island. The outfitter runs a big operation but has maintained a high success rate with virtually every hunter in the past five years taking at least one buck. Most hunters take two bucks, and some take three. Even those who intend to kill a single buck usually opt to take more once they get to Kodiak and see how outstanding the hunting can be.
Hunts.Net had 3 clients on this hunt in 1997, and the hunters said the outfitter goes out of his way to make sure everyone has a good time and gets plenty of action. Hunts.Net customers have reported excellent duck hunting and fishing for halibut, silver and king salmon at no extra cost.

You'll enjoy lodge quarters and meals as well as boat transportation to and from hunting area. The season is Sept. 15 to Dec. 31. The hunting is better late in the season when the bucks come down by the beaches. A hunter can often take all three bucks in the same day. Because late-season hunters see so many deer, the average and maximum trophy sizes increase. In the first half of the season you'll be taken by one of seven boats to a dropoff point, from which you'll hike up on the island to hunt all day. During the latter part of the season, the deer are along the beach, so you'll hunt from skiffs right from the lodge. Most bucks are big enough to make the Safari Club International record book. Late-season hunters see enough bucks that a number of animals large enough to quality for Boone and Crockett are taken each year. Late in the season this hunt is a good choice for an older hunter or one with physical difficulties. Several hunters in their 80s have done well on this hunt. The outfitter got his registered guide's license in spring 2003, and so now he also offers a guided option. This is a good bet for hunters who are serious about taking a trophy buck.
