| One of our Nebraska outfitters offers three-day spring gobbler hunts for Merriam's gobblers. Success has run 100% on this private ranch with bed and breakfast accommodations. The ranch covers 3,000 private acres along the Niobrara River near the Nebraska/South Dakota border. There are four miles of riverbottom with a mix of canyons and agricultural fields -- ideal turkey habitat. The rancher/outfitter runs some cattle and owns a bed and breakfast on the property. Birds typically weigh 17 to 24 pounds. Season is from mid-April to mid-May. Hunts.Net agents Rich LaRocco and Chuck Johnson have been on this hunt. Both killed birds and rated the hunt highly. The rancher is very quality conscious. A fun thing to do during the middle of the day is to dig for fossils in the banks of the Niobrara River. We found some interesting 1,000,000-year-old fossils, including rhino, giant turtle, horse, and camel. |
