Illinois bow hunt yields big bucks to bowhunters

This outfitter has been producing big bucks for a bowhunting clientele for about 15 years now, and he has been very successful. He used to take a few gun hunters, but the past few years he has dedicated this hunt to bowhunting only. He owns or leases about 10,000 private acres that he manages for quality bucks, and his customers have taken several that have scored 170 to 196 Pope and Young points plus many in the 150s and 160s. Most bucks taken by his customers score 140 to 160 P&Y. The hunt takes place in Pike County Illinois, which is famous for producing some outsize whitetail bucks, including several that rank high in the Boone and Crockett Club and Pope and Young Club records. I've known him for 20 years and we have enjoyed hunts together in Idaho and Quebec. Almost everybody sees trophy-caliber bucks on this hunt. The rut hunts are popular, but pre-rut unts also are highly productive.

Hunter success     Airport pickup?
Most hunters get shooting at mature bucks. Typically more than half of them miss due to buck fever. Most bucks score 140 to 160 Pope and Young points, but several bucks scoring in the 170s, 180s and even 190s have been harvested by customers on this trip.
 Hunting method      Airport pickup?
Tree stands are most effective. Outfitter: "Most hunters don't sit still long enough."      No. You can take a van shuttle from the St. Louis airport (about $100 round trip)
