Whitetail deer hunts in Kansas
Bucks in Kansas tend to grow bragging-size racks because there is plenty of feed, deer are not usually overpopulating the habitat, and a great deal of open land, especially crop land, forces deer to move in narrow bands of cover during November archery and December rifle seasons. Applications are due June 2 this year. There are no longer transferable landowner permits in Kansas. If somebody offers you a landowner permit, do not accept unless you're a family member. We have worked with some of our Kansas outfitters for many years, and our customers have had some excellent success.

NW Kansas outfitter fared poorly in drawings, openings for muleys and whitetail bucks

An outfitter with whom I've hunted in northwestern Kansas has thousands of acres of prime private leases that he has been managing for trophy bucks, but now that there are no landowner permits in Kansas, he is hurting for hunters. He had 10 hunters apply for permits for mule deer muzzleloader hunts, and only one of them drew. So if you acquired a mule deer stamp in the just-completed Kansas permit drawing for Units 1, 2, 3, 4 or 7, call us. He has been hunting his herds very lightly the last few years and has seen some great bucks, including muleys that he estimated would score 240 and 260. He sees quite a few in the 175 to 190 range, and the biggest a Hunts.Net customer has taken scored 217 gross B&C points. I had a sort of hangfire when I hunted with him and missed a 30-incher at 90 yards. This hunt is $5,000, and you'll have a lot of land to hunt. Last year he had more than 100,000 acres leased. He was expecting about half of his mule deer hunters to draw tags this year, and he thought the hunters who did not draw would elect to come whitetail hunting. Therefore, he had been holding his rifle whitetail hunts open. Unfortunately, the unsuccessful applicants decided to skip Kansas altogether this year, so if you drew a northwestern Kansas whitetail permit, we have room. The whitetail hunts are $3,500, and he might be able to offer a semi-guided hunt for a party with permits. Ask about Hunt MD3406. -- Rich LaRocco.

You can still buy a left-over deer tag in southwestern Kansas, and a former wildlife biologist with some great leases has openings at $4,500. This hunt offers an excellent chance to take a buck scoring 150 to 180 B&C. Ask about Hunt WD3406.
