Manitoba whitetail openings

Our main whitetail hunt in Manitoba is usually full at least a year in advance, so we were excited to find out the outfitter has room for three or four hunters in 2006. This hunt is $2,750.  Hunter success is typically 90 percent or better, and the bucks typically score in the 130s and 140s with a few in the 150s and sometimes bigger. The outfitter is well-organized, and we've never had a complaint even though we've been having customers hunt deer and black bear with him for more than 10 years now. Ask about Hunt WD44.

Nebraska whitetail deer
We have the opportunity this year to take up to eight hunters on ranches in two superb Nebraska units. Usually no tags are available for non-residents, but this year non-residents are guaranteed tags. Hunts are $3,000 plus a $1,000 trophy fee. Call for details. You must buy your tag by about June 26. Missouri whitetail hunt has openings Nov. 17-21

This rifle hunt takes place on private leases in northern Missouri near the Iowa border. The outfitter just retired from his regular job to devote more time to his deer hunting and has already picked up some additional property where he has seen some nice bucks while scouting. His best buck last year was 173 B&C. His hunters' trophies typically average about 140 B&C. A hunt is $2,500, and Missouri sells tags over the counter. Hunt WD570MO

Did you draw a blackpowder tag in Iowa's Zone 6?

This outfitter has been producing some excellent bucks, including a 195 and another that scored over 200. Those bucks appeared in North American Whitetail Magazine. You can any five days during the Dec. 26-Jan. 10 season, and the fee is $1,700 a person. Hunt WD570IA

Openings for rifle hunters and bowhunters on semi-guided hunt in northwestern Kansas

Alberta whitetail/muley combo: You can take both deer species on this hunt near Whitecourt, Alberta, about two hours from Edmonton. The hunt is $3,850 plus a harvest fee of $500 per deer. This outfitter typically takes whitetails scoring 140 to 165. Muleys are not as common as whitetails and should be considered a bonus. The outfiter said he is confident of getting shots at 140-plus whitetails for his hunters, but only about 50% of muley hunters score. There is a chance for a monstrous whitetail, 180 or better, but muleys seldom score more than 160. Hunt WD661.

Mule deer and whitetail hunts available on new leases soon: One of our outfitters is finalizing deer leases in Kansas, Nebraska and Montana. The 30,000-acre Montana lease also has some huge bull elk available to archery hunters. He said whitetail bucks in the 160s were taken on the Kansas property in 2004, while two whitetail bucks in the 150s were taken off the 17,000-acre Nebraska property, which is along the Niobrara River. Call for details. The Montana lease is good for mule deer and has some whitetails, too. Ask about Hunt No. 652.

Openings on two Texas whitetail hunts: Two whitetail hunts in western and northern Texas offer high success on mature, free-ranging animals. Both offer much bigger bucks than the Hill Country, and there are no high fences, which are common in south Texas. Details on the West Texas hunt. Details on the northern Texas hunt.

Northwestern Nebraska: Private land offers December blackpowder and November rifle hunts on bucks averaging 140 to 150 with some bucks in the 160s or better. Possibly a couple of rifle openings.

Colorado outfitter can accommodate two deer hunters this fall on lakeside lease: One of our outfitters called today, excited about picking up a 700-acre lease he has been wanting. "This lease isn't that big, but it's in a really good spot," he said. "It holds most of the cover along a reservoir that is the only water for miles. The whitetail deer really like this place. I was out there today hunting geese and we saw seven bucks, including a 150-class buck, and we also saw a 28-inch mule deer. You need five preference points to draw a tag in this zone. It will be difficult to get landowner tags because the bigger ranches get the landowner permits now even though most of the deer are on the smaller ranches and farms." A five-day full-service hunt is $3,700. Incidentally, the outfitter killed 27 geese in the past two days, including Canadas of two races, snow geese and a Ross's goose. The spring snow goose season starts Feb. 17 and runs into April. He can accommodate a party of four to six hunters on a no-frills one-day goose hunt for $900 for the entire party. That's as little as $150 a person per day. Ask about Hunt WD1698.
