Whitetail deer hunts in Colorado
Colorado is one of the best places to find a trophy-size whitetail because the state severely limits the number of hunters. Everybody -- residents and non-residents -- must either draw a tag or buy a transferable landowner voucher. Even landowners cannot hunt their own land unless they enter the "Ranching for Wildlife" program, which limits tags, or draw a transferable voucher. The result is that a high percentage of bucks reach maturity. Bucks scoring 150 to 170 are relatively common in eastern Colorado, even though deer numbers are relatively low. And every year there are bucks in the 170 to 200 range as well as some non-typicals that score 180 to 220 or more. Rifle hunts typically start in late October and early December. Bowhunters have an advantage because they can hunt during the peak of the rut in November. Applications are usually due in April, and in some units you'll need two to 10 preference points to draw a tag.

Eastern Plains hunt offers excellent trophy quality

Sportsmen in the know realize that the Eastern Plains of Colorado consistently produces some fine trophy whitetail bucks. That's because tags are extremely limited. Even landowners must draw tags to hunt their own land. Consequently, the bucks get a chance to grow old and big. This outfitter owns and leases land near Lamar, including riverbottom property along the famed Arkansas River, where bucks in the 150s and 160s are relatively common and where bucks in the 170s, 180s and 190s and even some in the 200s live out their lives. The outfitter is known more for producing big muleys, but this year the state has issued a few tags that are valid for whitetail only, so he's anxious to start building a reputation as a producer of trophy whitetails, too. Last year he had a whitetail hunter, but his tag was valid for either species, and that hunter shot a muley in the high 180s on the first morning and didn't even get to the whitetail habitat along the river. This hunt is $5,000, including guide, meals and ranch house lodging. This is for a 2x1 hunt that is five days long. He and his brother, who also ranches in the area, usually get at least one landowner permit each. The season is Dec. 1-14. Ask about Hunt WD3841.

Hunt the famous Arkansas River

This outfitter hunts along some of the tributaries of the Arkansas River as well as along the main river. Rich LaRocco, Hunts.Net president, got his biggest whitetail, which grossed 188 B&C while hunting with him. You'll need four preference points to draw the late season (early Dec.), one or two to draw the early season (late Oct.). $3,500 for a guided hunt, and if you don't draw you can buy a transferable voucher for an additional $2,500. Bucks are big due to low hunting pressure by residents as well as non-residents. I killed my biggest buck (188 gross B&C) on one of the ranches this outfitter hunts. Hunt WD3837.

Unit 951, eastern Colorado

This hunt is for mule deer or whitetail on 13,000 private acres south of Eagle's Nest. The ranch has produced whitetails as large as 232 B&C and muleys as large as 216 B&C. He takes up to four hunters a year. Hunts are typically Dec. 1-5 and 7-11. A nontypical whitetail that was in the 200 B&C class was missed on video a couple of years ago. You'll stay in a ranch house on the property. This hunt is full for 2008. The price has not been set for 2009 but will probably be in the $5,000 to $6,000 range. Hunt WD3802.
