Eastern Saskatchewan whitetail hunt yields good success

This eastern Saskatchewan deer hunt typically yields trophy whitetail bucks that average 130 to 140 Boone and Crockett points with the odd buck scoring 160 up to 196 B&C. From 1996 through 2002, hunter success has averaged 80 percent.

Now that both residents and non-residents are limited to one buck per year, the outfitter says he is seeing more and bigger bucks.

You'll stay either at a cabin with a hot shower on the outfitter's grain farm, which is just out of Endeavor near Mann Lake about 70 miles south of Hudson Bay, or in a rustic outpost cabin with no water in an area about 40 miles north. His concession includes 140 square miles.

The outfitter takes four hunters per week. Near home he hunts some farmland. Usually the guides will check fields early and come back for breakfast and then put the hunters out in stands at 11 a.m. till dark, about 6 hours.

Bucks typically score in the 130s to 140s with some over 150 killed yearly. The biggest buck a client has taken in the 10 years he has been guiding deer hunters scored 188 B&C points.

"There are quite a few bucks in the 160s and up to 165," he said. "But it's really hard to find one that will score over 170. The average mature buck up here has a 20-inch inside spread."

Hunting is done mostly from tree stands in wooded areas near grainfields. He baits with grain he raises. The area is about 50 percent wooded. He said deer hunters do well during the pre-rut in late October through the rut in late November. The last week of October is the blackpowder season. All four weeks of November and the first week of December are rifle hunts. Hunt WD-187.

Sometimes Hunts.Net puts deposits on hunts before we have customers lined up. We do this because some of the better hunts fill up early, and if we don't reserve a few spots we can't get our customers on these hunts. This is an example. It's a full-service trophy whitetail hunt in Saskatchewan. The outfitter is an old-timer who typically produces high success on mature bucks and some of them are monsters. For example, in the past two years, he has accommodated 46 hunters and has produced 42 bucks. Two of the customers who did not score passed on 38 and 40 bucks. We have had customers tak

B&C bucks on this trip. Usually more than half the deer taken score in the 150s or better, and the biggest bucks typically score 165 or more with a few giants. Currently we can book two hunts for Thanksgiving week.
